Red State Blue State Explanation

Great video on what happened for us to arrive at our now Red State equals Republican and Blue State equals Democrat nomenclature. But what it doesn’t do is talk about the motive.

CBS started it all.

In 1972, CBS labeled Republicans with Blue and Democrats with Red. Why? Because it made logical sense. The British Tory Party, conservative, was known to use Blue, while British Labor Party used Red. This was backed up with the fact that:

“red, on the other hand, was the color of Leftists, and left-leaning parties throughout the world. As it is today.”

Republicans were Blue. Democrats were Red. This is how all three networks worked for 20 years.

Then, the media must have seen the comparison between the US Democrats and Soviet Communism as a bad thing. In 1980, ABC first bucked the convention and switched the colors. The reason given now is that “Red for Reagan” made more sense but his election was in 1984 and ABC was already using the opposite color scheme for the 1980 election.

CBS then also switched the colors in 1984 to go along with ABC even though they were the organization that originally set the colors.

It wasn’t until 1996 that NBC also switched to make it unanimous.

But that doesn’t explain the why?

Here’s the real¬†Red state Blue state explanation.¬†It’s simple really. Anyone who’s ever played a videogame or watched a movie inherently understands it.

It’s the psychology of color that explains why the media worked to take Blue away from their enemies the Republicans and claim it for their side. When looking simply at Red vs Blue, Red is evil and Blue is good.

Good versus evil. Blue versus Red. That is why the media co-opted the color blue for their side.
