Stem Cells, the Right Way
Even with the astounding news that stem cells can be created from basic skin cells, there are those who continue to push for embryonic stem cell research (which grows and destroys embryos). These people are either doing this for financial reasons, which is horrid. Or, for example, Sen. Arlen Specter, who claims that “My own view is that science ought to be unfettered.” Simply, he doesn’t want to be proven wrong and he’s too stubborn to admit this. Others, like Sen. Tom Harkin and Rep. Dianne DeGette are still pushing embryonic research. If they represent you, tell them what you think.
We’ve been experimenting with adult stem cells for close to 40 years, now. :-) Stem cells are found in umbilical cord blood, too. Anywhere in the body, really. What fascinates people about embryonic stem cells, I figure, is that we hear they’re practically magic. Maybe because the embryonic cells are younger and easier to manipulate.
But, duh. I never considered that money and pride might also be why some folks are pushing unfettered testing of embryonic stem cells. :-)
I think this fascinating stuff. Why did God design these little undecided cells? Maybe we won’t know right now, maybe we’re really close, maybe they’re actually a result of The Fall? Dunno. :-)
