Rock Star: Day 8
Since Day 1, I’ve thought that Ty and Mig were the strongest competitors for actually getting the gig. Some of the others are talented people, but aren’t a good fit for the band, in my opinion. As of last night, I feel pretty good about my early predictions.
So let’s rundown this week’s full bill:
Bottom of the Barrel
J.D. went from being on the top of the world to looking very fragile. His version of We Are the Champions wasn’t a good idea and he didn’t perform it well. The worst part was the band noticed. He’ll bounce back, but I wonder if for the rest of the contest the band will remembert this dreadful song.
Daphna came out on the stage is a long, poofy evening dress with combat boots and long gloves to play The Clash’s Rock the Casbah. I was like, “What in the world is she thinking?!?” Then she mutilates the song. And when I say “mutilate” it isn’t a positive comment.
Tempted wasn’t a good song for Brandon, because, well, Brandon can’t sing. Ouch.
Fine, If You Like That Sort of Thing
Just shy of bombing, Jessica sang Because the Night by Pat Benatar. Now, I’m not even sure this song was popular back when it was popular. Jessica didn’t do herself any favors either and is likely to get into the Bottom Three with this performance. Then again, Navarro had some nice things to say about her. Uh huh.
Heather’s version of If It Makes You Happy didn’t. She said she was sick and it showed. I felt like I needed one of the surgeon’s masks to avoid whatever vile germ has infected this poor woman.
Jordis sang Gimme Some Lovin’ and really included the crowd but I just didn’t feel like she was a rock star as much as a band leader. Meanwhile, Navarro was working up his marriage proposal.
Good, But Not Great
Give a Little Bit is a great Supertramp song that the Goo Goo Dolls recently remade so it’s on a bit of an upswing and Deanna did a good job with it. By that I mean she didn’t have any major screwups but wasn’t exactly lighting up the stage either. I just don’t get “excitement” when I see Deanna perform
Ty did Everybody Hurts acoustic style and showcased his strong voice. This guy has to be considered one of the leaders for the prize.
Boy was I shocked when Suzie totally rocked Stevie Wonder’s Superstition. The band didn’t seem to love it but thought it was her strongest performance yet. Suzie is now safely off the chopping block.
Mig had a slightly different take on The Kink’s Lola and it was pretty cool. Good but not great. It’s kinda tough when the strongest piece of your performance is your Sergeant Pepper’s coat. Stylin’!
Knocked ‘Em Dead
Imagine my surprise when I found myself jumping around my living room to Tara’s version of Suffragette City. I didn’t think she had it in her. Maybe she found some inspiration from her wanna-be Ziggy Stardust getup but it didn’t matter because she totally killed.
They saved the best for last when Marty cranked out Nirvana’s Lithium. The band wasn’t so enthused but I thought it was clearly the best performance of the night.
My predictions for Bottom Three are: Jessica, Brandon and Daphna. What do you think?

oh my… where to begin…
Ty – to much of a showman, he was sooo dramatic and i don’t think his performance was anything special, just so-so
JD – blew it, too cocky, but will do better next time and definitely carries the INXS look the best
Daphne – looked bad, son was okay but the band didn’t like it
Brandon – aweful. i don’t think that he’ll go this week since the band needs to boot a girl.
Jessica – in her best Cher impersonation, skated by this week’s performance and probably safe until next week
Heather – was awful… blamed it on being sick but the fact is she stank. and the band called her on it “you’ll perform a lot of songs while being sick”
Jordis – perhaps the best of the girl singers, she’s safe for another few weeks
Deanna – again, another Cher impersonator, it doesn’t matter what this girl sings, they all sound the same, the voice is too manly
Suzie – performed very well… will stay on for a few weeks until they need to boot a girl.
Mig – did fine. still to effeminate for the band.
Tara – ok but still in Ozzy mode… the band doesn’t really like her so i can’t see her lasting very long.
Marty – a freak with crazy eyes.. did fine last night but too weird for the band. will stay on until next week.
my pick 3 lotto numbers:
Tara, Brandon, Daphne
should send Brandon home but my guess is Tara. who knows though. seems like INXS criteria tends to change…
My favorite redhead really blew it last night. Let’s hope it was just because she really was sick and she does better next week.
I don’t think Ty is going to win it. While he is talented, he’s too predictable and robotic. I think the INXS powers that be will go more for pretty-boy Mig or a wildcard.
Also, if they DO pick a lady, I hope they choose one who covers up a bit more (like Jordis). I am SO tired of the hoochie mama look. If I remember my rock history correctly, cool rocker chicks don’t need to be half-naked to be successful.
If they don’t pick Jordis they’ll be making a big mistake.
In sports drafting they have a saying: “don’t leave talent on the board.” That means you take the best player available to you — not one who “fits” your team or plays a specific position you’re trying to fill. Talent is king.
Jordis is the best talent on the board.
