Internet2 Is Blazing
What would you say to 6.25 gigabits per second? I’d say, “That’s freakin’ insane!” or “Where do I sign up?” Unfortunately, it could be some time before the general public has access to this kind of speed. Maybe it’s not too late for me to head back for some graduate work…
Gay Marriage Is Not About the Children
After reading Shelby Steele’s convincing argument on exactly why homosexual marriages would hurt our society, I felt the need to post.
Many hold Andrew Sullivan up as a model of reasonable thought, but his latest piece clearly deviates from logic into the realm of emotion. Steele takes each of his points and shows where he’s missing the boat.
Please note that Sullivan is not alone in misrepresenting gay marriage as similar to interracial marriage. As with Roe v. Wade, judges claim to find intent where there is none and that’s what Sullivan is doing with Loving v. Virginia. Like I’ve said before, this should be decided by the people not handed down from judges.
This is such an important issue facing our country, so for those of you thinking, “What’s the big deal?” Please do me a favor and read Steele’s Married With Children with an open mind. Our future depends on the choices we make today.
Mickelson Wins 1st Major
18th hole on Sunday… tie score… 15-foot birdie putt to win The Masters. Phil Mickelson had played in 42 majors and was generally regarded as the world’s best player who’d never won a major… until today. Phil rims in the putt and the crowd goes wild! Gotta feel good for the guy who finally got a King Kong sized monkey off his back. Congrats!
Life and Death in Iraq
Today marks the anniversary of the fall of Saddam. Tearing down his statue first gave Iraqis hope that a new day was coming. Now with the fighting intensified around Fallujah, what is needed is resolve. Strange as it sounds, America is more like Japan than Australia. The oppressors didn’t suddenly become less evil in the last year… our job just isn’t complete.
Ultra Courageous Mother Saves Baby
Up until today, Aron Ralston’s story was the most amazing I had heard. Now we might have to give his title to this woman in Mexico who performed her own C-section. There have been no other documented cases where this has happened and both mother and child lived. Isn’t it baffling that there have even been other cases? This lady is my new hero.
What’s the Story with Mohammed?
I must admit, I don’t know much about Mohammed other than he never claimed to be God, merely a prophet. Anyway, Steve Aquila does a quick bio of Mohammed that I think people will find informative.
Good News in Iraq
I like to focus on the good news and leave off the negative, depressing stuff for CNN. So here are some links I’ve found out-and-around:
- Two soldiers from Tennessee say there’s a lot of good news in Iraq
- U.S. military finds way around the press corps
- A Year Of Progress In Iraq
- A Revival for Iraq’s Oil Industry as Output Nears Prewar Levels
- Miscellaneous items cited in January
So why won’t the evening news broadcast it? Dr. Bob Arnot was apparently let go by NBC for reporting too much positive news. So we’re left with bloggers to find these hidden gems.
It’s also important for me to say that I do not mean to downplay the horrors of war. Our people are putting it all on the line for a controversial cause. In the end, each of us will have to decide if the cost was worth the benefit that has/will come from liberating Iraq. The sure fire way to screw it up would be to leave with the job half finished. But it looks like Bush won’t let that happen, which is good news in itself.
Do-It-Yourself Taxes
The 16th Admendment did us in. Before that, we had no income taxes and we got along just fine, thank you very much. Now we’ve got to make it to Tax Freedom Day (about 109 days) to finally be making money for ourselves! Anyway, the good news is that there are a lot of advantages to doing your own taxes online. I’ve been doing mine with TurboTax even before Intuit bought the application; pretty straight-forward stuff. Since it looks like the pain of an overgrown tax system is never ending, at least getting them done is now less torturous.
Gotcha!
Predictably enough, the Museum of Hoaxes has the Top 100 April Fool’s Day Hoaxes of All Time. Yeah but, they didn’t list that time Uncle Raymond swapped the campers toothpaste for Preparation H… Guess you had to have been there.
