Dating Scene Moves to the Grocery

Those crazy French. Now they’ve decided that supermarkets are the perfect place to meet that special someone. “Pardon, but I couldn’t help but notice you have deodorant in your cart?”

Museum Lands ‘Ring’ Effects Exhibit

The award-winning special effects from The Lord of the Rings movies can now be seen as a exhibit in London’s Science Museum. You can learn more from their site, but visiting the museum is a must for fans living in London. I wonder what the airfare rates are?

Terry Tate Isn’t Your Average Co-Worker

If only every office had an “enforcer” like Terry Tate, productivity would shoot through the roof. Sure it’s all tongue-in-cheek, but maybe it’s not such a bad business idea after all? How this helps Reebok sell shoes, I’m not sure. “You can’t walk away from a K22 paper jam, baby!”

Big Apple is Top Dog

For the fifth straight year New York City has topped the Harris Poll for where most people would want to live. Now my question is this, because New York has so many people did they all get to vote? How is a little town like Norfolk, VA supposed to compete? (I should talk, I love in Shy-Town, we came in 6th.) My premise is that marketing has a lot to do with how people perceive each city. We’ve all been taught that New York is exciting, San Francisco is cool, Orlando is fun, Las Vegas is sinful. You get the picture. Is that what people were voting on? If not, how can you not vote for Honolulu?

Musical Branding Chairs

The 22 Immutable Laws of Branding MarketingFix.com became Up2speed.com, then quickly changed to Marketing Wonk. The only thing funnier is that News.com decided re-brand itself as Get Up to Speed. Do these guys really understand how branding works?

Filmcritic Critiques Films… Really

It’s generally a good idea to get a “Yay” or “Nay” on the latest movie, you know, with Hollywood cranking out movies like mass-produced Japanese watches rather than hand-crafted, Swiss timepieces. So, who do you trust? I’ve always been a fan of Screen It! The IMdB is the granddaddy of the family. Ebert’s mostly jaded, but some people like his list of The Great Movies. Rotten Tomatoes is fun. And today I found Filmcritic.com. Good stuff, especially entertaining was one reviewers interaction with an angry movie producer.

Scan That Greenback

The Treasury has a new money and Interactive Bill shows you their high-tech features. I doubt that new HP printer can duplicate this puppy.

Gadgets Galore

A convergence gadget is anything that combines functionality from previously separate items. So, things like a PDA that’s also does GPS or a cell phone that’s also a camara. Here are a few of ZDNet’s favorite multipurpose gadgets. I don’t know why Danger doesn’t add PDA functionality to their Sidekick? Oh wait, they did!

Ritter’s Show to Go On

Despite John Ritter’s recent death, ABC has decided to continue 8 Simple Rules and deal with his death in the show’s story. Sure to be a ratings boost, the question exists, what, if anything, will they say about the afterlife. Did Ritter’s characters do enough “good” deeds? Does God grade on the curve? Given some of today’s extreme activists, will the show be allowed to mention God? It’ll be interesting to see… next Tuesday @ 8 EST.

God Is On TV

Have you seen God? He’s on TV you know. Well, at least Joan of Arcadia’s premise is that God is showing himself to Joan. This short blurb does little but whet your appetite and the show’s direction is unclear. In any event, it’s certainly an interesting concept and actress Amber Tamblyn is certainly inspired by this “golden opportunity.” America can see the premiere on Friday, September 26 at 8 p.m. ET/PT.

Record Label Putting Artists First

I’m not the biggest fan of Evanescence, but I sure do like their label. For years I’ve been waiting for the huge record labels to give way to a more diverse collections of artists, and in turn, music. Now it looks like the smallish label, Wind-up Records, is turning some heads by working with artists in it for the music and then letting them go to it. Until someone puts together the MegaMusicTM website where people can sample and buy a song-at-a-time from a vast array of artists (Indies too!), the Big 5—Sony, Warner, BMG, EMI and Universal—will rule the industry with an iron fist. Go get ‘em Wind-up!

Remember 9/11

The terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 are still fresh in the minds of many. Yet not as strong as last year, and these memories will likely fade further in the years to come. But it’s important for us to remember those who lost their lives, how and why the attacks came and work together towards a better future. There are so many inspirational accounts from that day, here is Stanley Praimnath’s story.

Bono Sees Church as AIDS Savior

The media has put a great deal of effort into AIDS awareness and research, promoting condom use over abstinence, but the epidemic wages on. Especially in Africa. Bono has a passion for the victims of this disease and wants Congress to pass the African AIDS Relief legislation. But his hope isn’t in goverments, “…if it isn’t going to happen through the church, it’s going to be so very difficult for government.” There is progress, it’s just slow arriving.

Wacky Yes, But Wonderful Too

Memories can be both good and bad. Case in point: I used to love collecting Wacky Packages. Collecting anything really, but coins and stamps were high-ticket items, so I had to get my collecting jones from 25 cent packs of these silly stickers. Then there was the whole, “Oh man, you found a Crust toothpaste?!? I thought there weren’t any.” It was like taking an 8-year-old to nickel slots. So, now for the bad memories… I don’t know where any of my Wacky Packages are. 8^(

Roddick Wins U.S. Open

Is Roddick the next Sampras? Agassi? It’s quite possible as he won this first Grand Slam in straight sets over the world’s number one player.
