64-bit Processors: Gamer’s Delight

AMD launches it’s 64-bit processor but since Windows’ 64-bit OS is still some time off, does it really make sense? That, my friends, depends on how you plan to use your computer. Gamers and video buffs will want to take a long, hard look at these systems when the time comes to upgrade. Whichever the route—AMD or Intel—faster is definitely better.

Generosity of One Man

$3 shoe-shine man gives $89,000 to hospital. Those are words you don’t hear everyday, but maybe we should? We need to hear more stories about the hard-working, and in this case, generous Americans! I’m sick of all the murders and rapes and crimes that dominate our news sources. Can’t we get a little balance? Good thing you found us, now you can get positive news on a more regular basis.

Cuban Gets Distribution

Todd Wagner and partner Mark Cuban run HDNet, among other things. Now they’ve purchased Landmark Theatres in an attempt to form a complete vertical segment for movie creators to design, build and distribute their work. Traditional channels present an impregnatable fortress to the indie crowd. Verticals rarely succeed in real life (see Focus) but working towards the goal of giving more movie makers a chance to produce is a noble one. [via BoingBoing]

Mother Teresa Trinkets Miss the Mark

There’s something of a mad rush to get Mother Teresa “merchandise” out into the market, things like rosaries, crucifixes and key chains. It seems to me that rather than idolizing Mother Teresa, we should be looking to the God she served. Better than toting a Mother Teresa key chain, how about giving some time at the local soup kitchen. Emulation is the highest form of flattery.

Freestyle Animation

Finding Nemo Animation has never been hotter. Finding Nemo was an amazing success and amatuer animators are strutting their stuff over at AnimWatch. I’ve posted on Rustboy before and there are boatloads of other talented individuals out there in cyberspace.

The Elegant Universe

October 28th, PBS will air The Elegant Universe, a three-part special on a book by the same name from Brian Greene. The best communicators take complex ideas and make them understandable to the common man. That’s what this book does with physics. All the detail and complexity of the universe join together and whisper evidence of a grand designer, far more than a random chance. [via kottke]

Freedom Has Its Benefits

Life in Muslim countries is very difficult for women—often considered property. But with the Taliban on the run in Afghanistan, some girls are exercising their new freedoms.

Tea: Uber Vitamin

If someone told you that by drinking 5 cups of this common beverage, it would reduce the likelihood of colds and flu and fight cancer, wouldn’t you be all over it? Turns out, tea is like an immunity vitamin. Lipton should be planning a marketing campaign jolly quick.

From Admiral to Preacher

David Robinson is truly blessed. Not just because he was able to do something he truly loved—basketball—but to go out on top. Now he’s turning his attention to helping others. He’s joined paster and writer, Max Lucado, as a “minister at large” for the Oak Hills Church of Christ in San Antonio. In addition, he wants to fund-raise for Carver Academy, an inner-city elementary school. Blessed? Yes, but each day he’s giving some back.

Doom Has Not Yet Arrived

Jedi AcademyHaven’t spent as much time gaming lately, but came across Blue’s News, which was Bookmark 1 back in the day. Read the post about some Doom 3 previews. All well and good, but the game is still many months off, so what can I play until then? Probably don’t want to pick from the 25 Most Overrated Games, uh… check. Then there’s this Jedi Academy game which is getting stellar reviews. Maybe I should head over to Amazon?

Stupendous Gadgets

PC Expo is now TechXNY and even though it’s scaled down from previous years, you can always count on the top technology companies to showcase their leading products. This Siemens phone looks totally scrumptious.

Climb Every Mountain

Keegan Reilly is a mountain climber. The young man just recently climbed Japan’s tallest mountain—Mt. Fuji. Pretty good by all accounts but when you learn that he is a paraplegic you’ve got to give the guy some serious respect. Never give up on your dreams. [via PositivePress]

Fast Women and Dots…

Men and women are different. I hear you say, “No kidding.” Women can count faster than men, at least with numbers less than 5. Some aren’t convinced, but it makes sense to me, especially when you think about the competition that exists in shopping malls all across the U.S.
