Iraqi VP Captured

Taha Yasin Ramadan, an Iraqi vice president linked closely to Saddam, is now in U.S. hands. In with the original coup in 1968, Ramadan has a long-time affiliation with Hussein and his terroristic actions. 36 of the 55 most wanted are now apprehended. Keep up the good work soldiers!

Bears 0, Hiker 10

I always like hearing about someone surviving B00005JLRQ.01.THUMBZZZ.jpg a potentially life threatening event, just in case I find myself in a similar situation. In New Jersey, a hiker survived a bear attack by bashing its nose with her elbow. (Mental note: Purchase the latest Jackie Chan DVD.)

Detroit Mayor Says, “We’re #1!”

Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick says their city is doing the best job of dealing with the blackout problem because they were the first to contribute a plan under the direction of the newly formed Homeland Security department. Now the blackout is an opportunity for the citizens of Detroit to show what they’re made of. Sounds like something a mayor would say. Kinda reminds me of the Scouts motto, “Be prepared.”

LAN Parties for the Whole Family

An article over at CNN suggests that video games are being played by more and more families. I see great family values in games like Quake… Nothing like the family getting the good old pentagram of protection and fraggin’ each other with Rocket Launchers. Maybe this will lead to a family feud type reality tv series, where two Clans duke it out head-to-head in front of a “live” studio audience. Hey, maybe Bill Cosby can host it. And you know what else… I expected a lot more from Billcosby.com.

Long-shot Wins PGA

Part of the American mythos is rooting for the underdog. Well yesterday, that dream paid off for unheralded Shaun Micheel. His first PGA Tour victory was a major—the PGA Championship. Needing a par on the 72nd hole, his dead-aim second shot from the rough landed only inches from the cup, assuring his victory. Micheel ended with, “To have my name on that trophy, I don’t really know what I’m thinking right now.” Americans everywhere are thinking, “Way to go!”

Box Office Bombs

I posted the other day that Gigli was the worst rated movie on IMDb. (Since then, it’s risen a hair to be only half of the most terrible pair.) Now, MSN puts together the 10 Biggest Box Office Failures. These movies were the overhyped, high-priced bombs that killed careers and shut-down studios. Little hint the the “winner,” what cost over $90 million, netted only about $4M and starred the sometimes funny Eddie Murhpy? You don’t remember? Neither did I.

World’s Smallest Political Quiz

Quick and painless, but also vague and a bit inaccurate, but nonetheless, the World’s Smallest Political Quiz is interesting.

Northeast Blackout Had Surprisely Few Problems

The media loves to jump on a crisis, so when the electricity went out for a good portion of the Northeast U.S., they went into 24-hour crisis-mode. Problem (for them) was there were no signs of terrorism, no rioting, no deaths… basically no problems that they generally cover as news. I say, when the mainstream press has no news, that’s good news. Today, cities are slowly getting their electricity back. Wonder how long it will take before the press drops the story?

Trading Spaces Huge Success

If you haven’t seen Trading Spaces, it’s not hard to describe. Two families swap rooms for two days and then proceed to tear it down, then build it up. Designers and builders from the show provide direction and the results are, to say the least, surprising. I admit, I’m addicted. But, so are many others. The Learning Channel had no idea how big this show would grow. It even has spin-offs! Give it a watch… it’s better than 90% of those other reality TV shows.

Another Terrorist Plot Foiled

They’re coming fast and quick now as British authorities have learned about a terrorist al Qaeda plot unearthed by the Saudi government. 10 people have been arrested in Saudi Arabia who were thought to be targeting a British Airways aircraft. Hunting down these small, independant cells is very difficult so it’s a grand reward to shut one down and avert their potential dangers. It’s also good to see the Saudi’s working to help fight terrorism rather than blindly support members of their religion; regardless of their intentions.

The Future of Talk

Telecom is one of those ultra-huge industries with profit projections well into the unforeseeable future. Michael Robertson wants to upset their apple cart. Using a specialized version of voice-over-IP called session initiation protocol (SIP) to circumvent the telcos (somewhat) monopolized advantage, he hopes that you’ll use his company (and the Information Superhighway) to call your relatives in Arizona… all at a small price, of course. I say, competition is a good thing, keep it up Mike. [via BoingBoing]

3 Suspected Terrorists Captured

We’ve got another good news item in the war on terrorism. Three people have been arrested in what’s believed to be a plan to smuggle a rocket-launcher style weapon into the U.S. Ties to al-Qaida seem obvious but haven’t been declared just yet. Keep up the good work guys, I still would like to fly the friendly skies. (United’s trademark on “friendly skies” has run out, so I won’t be sending them any cash.)

Good Saddam Drives an Ambulancer

There’s more than one Saddam Hussein in Iraq, and the nice one wants everyone to know it. The 31-year-old ambulance driver notes, “Contrary to what one might think, to be called Saddam during Saddam’s rule was not good.” File that under “obvious.” *smirk*
